Create an assumption
Use this guide to log a new assumption in the Assumptions register.
Before you start
You need Editor or Owner access to create assumptions.
Steps
1. Open the Assumptions register
In the project sidebar, click Assumptions.
2. Click New assumption
Click the + New assumption button in the top-right corner of the register.
3. Complete the Title and description
- Title (required) — A short, clear statement of what is assumed to be true. For example: "The client will provide access to legacy systems within two weeks of project start."
- Description (optional) — Additional context or detail about the assumption.
- Assumption statement (optional) — A formal statement in the form "We assume that…" for governance purposes.
4. Set confidence and classification
- Confidence level — How confident you are that this assumption is correct:
- High — You are reasonably certain this is true
- Medium — There is some uncertainty
- Low — The assumption is uncertain and needs early validation
- Category (optional) — Select a category from your organisation's configured list.
5. Document the impact and validation plan
- Impact if false (optional) — Describe what happens to the project if this assumption turns out to be wrong. This helps prioritise which assumptions to validate first.
- Validation action (optional) — Describe how you will confirm or disprove the assumption (e.g. "Confirm with sponsor in kick-off meeting").
- Validation date (optional) — Set a target date for completing validation.
6. Assign ownership
- Owner (optional) — Assign the assumption to a project member who will be responsible for validating it.
7. Set flags if applicable
- Mark as constraint — If the assumption represents a fixed boundary the project must operate within.
- Mark as dependency — If the project cannot proceed without this assumption being true.
8. Click Create assumption
Click Create assumption to save. You will be taken to the assumption detail page.
What happens next
After creating an assumption:
- The assumption is assigned a reference code (e.g.
A-001) automatically. - The status is set to Open.
- The Quality Score is calculated based on the fields you have completed.
You can edit any field later from the assumption detail page by clicking Edit.
